King's Highways 417 - www.OntHighways.com

Highway 417 is the main thoroughfare through Ottawa.  The 417 runs from the Ontario/Quebec Boundary west towards Ottawa (on a somewhat odd routing that avoids the unstable soil conditions of the South Nation River).  It skirts downtown Ottawa, where the freeway is known as 'The Queensway'.  As of Autumn 2004, Highway 417 now runs westerly to Arnprior.  The 417 will continue to be extended westerly in the coming years to Renfrew, and possibly even to the Pembroke/Petawawa areas.  Because Highway 417 extensions are built from east to west, Highway 417's exit numbers are based on kilometric distances from the eastern terminus (the Quebec Border).  Numbering exits from east to west contradicts with typical Ontario exit numbering standards.

   Western Terminus:  Current (as of autumn 2004): Highway 417 ends just west of Ottawa Road 29 at the Ottawa - Renfrew County Line.

Eastern Terminus:  Highway 417 ends at the Ontario - Quebec Border.  The freeway continuation of Highway 417 into Montreal is known as Autoroute 40.

Length:  Approx. 181 km

Multiplexes:  None.  Formerly an unposted multiplex with Highway 17 along the Queensway.

Trans Canada:  Entire Length, as the Ottawa Valley Route.

AADT (2001): Highest: 180,600 from Parkdale Avenue (exit # 122) to Rochester Street (exit # 121B) within the City of Ottawa;
Lowest:  12,000 from Prescott & Russell Road 10 (exit # 17) to Highway 17 (exit # 9).
