Two views of Highway 401 looking east from Kennedy Road (Mississauga) towards the 401/403/410 interchange. This interchange is the site where the 18+ lane, 4 carriageway, 401 narrows to a meager, 6+ lane, two carriageway freeway. The top picture shows a more centralized view, whereas the bottom picture shows the high-speed flyover to Highway 410 in greater detail. Signage for the core to collector transfer for the Dixie Road interchange.
Although this ramp to Dixie Road marks the beginning of the short C-D
through Mississauga, there is no signage indicating it as the beginning of
the collector lanes. Presumably this is done because this segment of
collector lanes is disjointed from the main section through Toronto. Picture taken: March 27th, 2006. Size: 45kb. |

A view of the 401/403/410 interchange from Dixie Road. This interchange is 4-levels high, and contains 7 high-speed flyover ramps. This is even more impressive considering that the interchange is actually not full access; Movements from the EB 401 to WB 403 and vice versa are not (as of yet) permitted. Looking west upon the 401 from Kipling Road in Etobicoke. Highway 401 is 10 lanes from Kipling Avenue to the Highway 427 interchange. The discontinuity of the C-D system from Kipling Avenue to Renforth Drive represents the largest bottleneck on Highway 401. Unfortunately when the 401/427 interchange was completed in the early 1970s the overpasses were not constructed long enough to allow a 12-lane 401 to pass through the interchange. Highway 401 looking east from the Kipling Road overpass in Etobicoke. Kipling Avenue is a notable spot on the 401. It is the western end of the (main set) of Core-Distributor (C-D) lanes. East of Kipling to Brock Road in Pickering, Highway 401 has a minimum of 12-through driving lanes split between 4-carriagways. Picture taken: June 24th, 2004. Size: 80kb. |

Islington Avenue, the main set of the core-distributor system ends, where
Highway 401 becomes only 10-lanes westerly to the
427 interchange. Picture taken: June 24th, 2004. Size: 65kb |

Highway 401 looking west from the Weston Road overpass in the west end of Toronto. This picture shows Highway 401 looking west from the Avenue Road overpass in Toronto. Currently construction is underway to widen Highway 401 between Hoggs Hollow and Allen Road from a 12 lane freeway to a 14 lane facility. This is being accomplished by adding one new through lane in each direction in the collector lanes. This construction was announced as part of the $401 million dollars for Highway 401 and was announced by the previous government. Picture taken: July 23rd, 2004. Size: 40kb. |

This picture shows Highway 401 looking east from the Avenue Road (Highway 11A) overpass in North York. This section of Highway 401 was the first part of the Toronto Bypass to be rebuilt as a 12 lane C-D facility. At first, only 1mile of Highway 401 was a 12 lane facility from the Avenue Road interchange, easterly, for about 1 mile. This was of course part of a much larger series of contracts that saw 17 miles of Highway 401 12-laned from Islington Avenue to Highway 48. Picture taken: July 23rd, 2004. Size: 55kb. |

This view looks easterly into the early morning sun across the Hogg's Hollow
Bridges. 4-high level bridges carry Highway 401 overtop of this large

both eastbound collector and express lanes are using the express lane
structure. Picture taken: May 26th, 2007. Low-res: 40kb. High-res: 135kb. |
