City of Toronto Exit signage for the southbound Highway 427 ramp.  The ramp from westbound Highway 409 to southbound Highway 427 is a very tight loop ramp with a ramp speed of 30km/h.  This tight ramp is unfortunate, as considerable amounts of traffic use it to bypass a busy stretch of Highway 401Click here for Highway 427 images.

City of Toronto Signage at the split for the Highway 427 interchange.  This sign was erected by the GTAA (Greater Toronto Airport Authority) who now owns and maintains the mainline freeway lanes westerly to Pearson Airport.  The collector lanes (leading to the 427 exit) are still under the jurisdiction of the MTO as far west as the ramps to and from the 427.

City of Toronto Looking east from the City View Drive overpass.  City View Drive is located directly on the east side of Highway 27, performing the task of a east-side service road in the vicinity of Highway 409.

City of Toronto Looking west through the depressed section of Highway 409 from the Iron Street overpass.  Highway 409 passes through an industrial area for virtually its entire length.  This short (roughly 1km in length) depressed section of highway is the only example of an Ontario freeway to be depressed with outer retaining walls as is pictured.

City of Toronto Looking west from the Martin Grove Road overpass.  Highway 409 is among the only vintage 1960s-1970s era freeways left unaltered in Ontario.  Until the last decade or so, most urban Ontario freeways very much resembled Highway 409, before being 'modernized' to the rather bland standards commonly seen today.

City of Toronto Advanced signage for the Highway 401 interchange at the eastern end of Highway 409.  Only the eastbound 401 is accessible from Highway 409.  Traffic bound for Highway 401 west is directed to follow Highway 427 southbound.

City of Toronto Signage at the eastern end of Highway 409.  At the time this photo was taken, one lane was closed on the ramp to the collector lanes.  Typically, two lanes depart the 409 for both the express lanes and collector lanes on the eastbound 401Click here for Highway 401 images.
